Experience the World in Downtown Coral Gables
July is here and Summer is halfway over though it’s not too late to take a trip and explore the world from your very own backyard. Nearly 40% of the population of Coral Gables, according to the City’s demographics, is from countries outside the United States and the shops and restaurants reflect the variety of cultures and customs one can explore in the City Beautiful. Our Downtown is vibrant, culturally rich and full of exciting ways to travel without having to book a plane ticket. This Summer, we’re experiencing the world one country at a time by immersing ourselves in the unique retail stores and restaurants here in the Gables.
The Charm of the French Riviera
Explore a sun-soaked, al fresco dining experience that will transport you back to the coastline of the French Riviera right on Miracle Mile at Gustave – your local French restaurant. Here you can find the classics – ranging from Pain Au Chocolat, to Croque-Monsieur, to the drool-worthy Le Paris-Brest. If you’re looking to sweeten up the day even more, stop by for a scoop at La Glace – voted amongst the best ice creams in the New Times Poll. The parlor – named after the word “ice cream” in French, features lip-smacking flavors (think cake batter with chocolate icing swirls, pineapple, and so many more).
The Fiery Moves of Spain
A trip to the Flamenco capital of the world is possible at Bellmont Restaurant – nestled in Miracle Mile, and the home to weekend flamenco shows with an excellent cochinillo a la leña. Find their events schedule and make reservations. If you want more of the Spanish culture, “ir de tapas” is something you don’t only have to do in the streets of Madrid. You can do it right here – and enjoy a selection of tapas from various restaurants – making stops at La Taberna Giralda and Bulla, for example. The stroll will have you feeling like you’re ‘tapeando’ through Gran Via!
A Little Bit of Spice and a Little Bit of Salsa in Mexico
Add a little bit of spice to your Coral Gables travels with some stops at the Mexican restaurants. When you sit down at Talavera, close your eyes, smell the spices, and taste the delicious ‘antojitos’ or’ moles’, your taste buds will thank you as you are transported to the heart of Mexico City or Puebla. The country is home to lots of street food and grab-and-go options that are as flavorful as they are cultural. Recreate this experience with some take-out from Coyo Taco. Can’t go home without a taste of Mexico in a paleta! At Morelia Gourmet Paletas, you can enjoy paletas made from fresh ingredients completely personalized for you!
If Italy is on your mind, head over to Freddo USA for authentic gelato – chocolate and coconut are a favorite double scoop. You could also book a table and enjoy a “cena deliziosa” at Luca Osteria where the dolcis are equally as delicious as the pasta. But, if you’re looking for a rustic trattoria-like experience, Salumeria 104 serves Northern Italian traditional home- made classics. Looking for a little more adventure? Visit the Venetian Pool – a little reminder of Venice right in our own City.
A Trip to the Continent of Asia
Prepare to spend some time browsing through a large variety of eclectic pieces at Golden Triangle, select travel souvenirs as you find exciting treasures in every corner of the store, so you can take a little piece of Asia home with you! Before heading back home though, take a side trip through Thailand with stops at some of our Downtown classics. Khaosan Road – a colorful, vibrant part of Bankok – has a new spin here in the Gables. On Giralda Ave this Thai Street Eatery offers a variety of traditional street food. Lotus Garden – a staple on Miracle Mile – is also a phenomenal option for some authentic Thai dishes. Thinking of an affordable short trip to Thailand, visit Malakoor Thai Isaan. Delicious! But if you are in the mood for Sushi, instead, Sushi Maki has you covered. Time to get rollin’ over to all the great options that Asia has to offer within our Downtown blocks!
Add More Stamps to your Coral Gables “Cultural Passport”
There are so many ways to experience travel in Coral Gables this summer, and here are some additional options to keep in mind!
- Travel via a Good Book: Guidebooks, novels situated in locales near and far, and memoirs of great explorers …reading is not only, “fundamental,” but vital to expanding one’s knowledge, sense of place, and understanding of a culture or country far away. The legendary Books & Books is the top drawer of independent bookstores and the extraordinary staff (yes, they read and know their stuff) will guide you to whatever city is calling you. The Coral Gables Library and Barnes & Noble are also within walking distance of the renowned Miracle Mile.
- Coffee Tasting: Enjoy a sip of Australia at Threefold Cafe. Authentic, amazing and an A+ coffee tasting experience! If you’re looking for a trip around the globe with coffee, make a quick stop at Pasion del Cielo and discover their international selection.
- Visit the Globe through Film: step into the Coral Gables Art Cinema, sit back and enjoy award-winning films from all regions of the world, like Le Circle Rouge from France, Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo set in Peru, Slalom set in the glorious French Alps, the award-winning Cinema Paradiso from Italy, and Tetsuo: The Iron Man from Japan.
- Grab a Bike and Discover: Rent a bike at No Boundaries Sport on Aragon Avenue and see where the wheels take you. Who knows? You may end up making a quick stop at H Benitez Art Gallery and experiencing Old Havana or sampling some Picanha at 77 Sport Bar.
