International Experiences in Coral Gables: Travel Abroad Without Leaving the City Beautiful

Coral Gables is an international city, with more than 200 multinational companies headquartered here, 20 consular corps and trade offices, a founder who paid tribute to the best of international architecture and a thriving Downtown with businesses that represent this global spirit, it’s a magical place that offers the best of international culture.

Whether you’re daydreaming and reminiscing about your glorious summer travels now that we’re firmly back-to-school or wishing you’d been able to get away, we have a few ideas for experiences in Coral Gables that will transport you to other parts of the world.

Perhaps the best way to get to know a different culture, or feel transported to a different place, is to learn a new language. The Società Dante Alighieri (300 Aragon Avenue, Suite 250) was formed in 1889 and the Coral Gables chapter was started in 1997. The purpose of the organization is to “promote the study of the Italian language and culture throughout the world”. At their Coral Gables location, you can take classes in Italian, French, and German, prep for an upcoming trip, brush up on that high school-level French or just learn something new when you enroll in a class.

“The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest (people) of the past centuries,” said Descartes – at Books & Books (265 Aragon Ave), you can travel back in time or around the world when you dive into a book from their expertly curated selection. Get to know a place by diving into a book; whether it’s an acclaimed piece of literature or a beautiful book of architecture, food or design. It’s worth noting that they also have an extensive selection of travel books so that you can start planning that next adventure now.

At the Coral Gables Art Cinema (260 Aragon Ave), they harness the power of a good film to transport you across the world. In fact, you can go to London every Friday! The cinema has partnered with the National Theatre Live, a British organization, to broadcast live performances straight from the stage in London. Keep an eye out for foreign films that you can’t see anywhere else than at this cozy cinema on Aragon.

Another restaurant with an eclectic set of influences is the newly opened Ad Lib (2415 Ponce de Leon). Order appetizers ranging from Smoked Fish Dip to Grilled Maitake Mushrooms and then move onto a Pasta Pomodoro or Steak Frites. It’s a taste of international menu favorites in a chic setting that feels perfect in international Coral Gables.

Check out Wolfe’s Wine Shoppe (124 Miracle Mile) for a taste of the best international wines. Visit on a Friday for a tasting that will take you through the wines of a certain theme – a recent tasting featured rieslings from more than just Germany. If you’re cooking a tapas dinner party at home, ask them to help you with a pairing, or order pizza and pair it with a refined Italian wine.
